It’s natural for us to care, at least a little, about what other people think about us, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily healthy. If you find yourself often creating mind stories about what someone thinks about what you just said or did, you are most likely creating unnecessary stress for yourself. It’s a symptom of low self-confidence that you should try and do away with.
Here are 4 tips you can use when you find yourself worrying too much about what other people think of you.
Tip #1 –
Remember that no one is perfect
Everyone makes mistakes. And everyone has issues that they could be working on in order to become better, happier, people. Even you. Even me. But, it also includes the people that you’re worrying about liking you or thinking you’re good enough, smart enough, funny enough,… You get the idea.
When you realize no one is perfect, you can accept that those people you’re worried about have flaws too. Now, I’m not saying to look at every negative thing you can find about those people, but it will help you be less stressed about what they think of you when you make a mistake if you remember that they make mistakes too.
Tip #2 –
Realize they’re not thinking about you
I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt that said ‘you’ll stop worrying about what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do.”
Most people are caught up in their own worry and stress. So when you come into contact with someone who seems to look down on you, they may just be caught up in whatever’s going on in their world. It could be that they just mad a bad decision, or they’re feeling bad about themselves.
The reality is that most of the time, people aren’t thinking about us at all, but are focused on what’s going on in their own lives. They often react out of that place too, not based on what you’ve done or said. When you remember that, it makes it a lot easier to stop worrying about it.
Tip #3 –
Remember that you’re not going to get along with everyone
Of course, we want everyone we meet to like us. But the truth is, we are not going to get along with everyone, and we are not going to instantly like everyone we meet.
Sure, it’s challenging to realize that you’re just not going to click with everyone you meet. But, if you find you’re doing whatever it takes to make someone like you, you need to change your plan. It’s a waste of energy and life is way to short to be worrying about what this person you don’t click with thinks of you.
You can’t control what they’re thinking, and unless you’re a psychic, you can’t read their minds.
So make sure you’re living your own life to the fullest , just shrug it off, realize that they may not even be thinking about you, and move on.
Tip #4 –
Go for your goals
When you have a goal that you really want to accomplish do you just go for it, or do you let what other people might think stop you from even getting started?
We have friends and family who mean well, for the most part, but that doesn’t stop them from telling us we’re being crazy, or irrational when we want to go for our dreams.
The only way to get around them really is to remember that life is short, not everyone is going to like and agree with us, and just go for it anyways.
When you stop worrying about what other people think about you, you open yourself up to the freedom to live life confidently on your own terms, to make your own decisions, and to take your own risks. When you find yourself worrying too much about it, remember these four tips and then go do what you are meant to – live life to the fullest!
