When you think about the combination of courage and confidence, what does it really mean to you?
To me, this combination means that I am brave enough to be myself. Sure, it can be scary at times… I’m a little weird, in case you hadn’t noticed. And for many years I hid behind another name, and hardly ever left my house. So for me, being able to be myself and share my experiences with you is a daily test of both my courage and my confidence.
We are all worthy in our own unique ways. And as my mother used to say, ‘There’s no point trying to hide anything. The truth always finds a way out.’
But, when you’re not confident, you don’t have the courage to do the things you should be doing. And when you’re too confident, you’ll do them whether you have the courage or not, and consequences be damned. So where’s the balance?
That’s what you have to figure out for yourself. Each of us walks a different tightrope when it comes to confidence and courage. But, one thing I can do for you in this challenge is give you some ideas on how to build up both while you’re learning to embrace the unique person you are.
What do you get out of being yourself?
Well, besides getting rid of the stress of hiding yourself and trying to be someone you’re not, here’s a few more things that having the courage and confidence to be yourself can give you.
Greater fulfilment and personal satisfaction.
Life has more meaning when it's 100% authentic.
People will find you more interesting and pay attention to you more. Authentic people are attractive to pretty much everyone.
Greater ability to take risks and be creative
Your life will have more depth and you'll experience more success in every part of your life. For a creative person, this is pretty much essential.
Still not sure of how to be a confident you? These tips might help:
Be aware of who you are inside
Really get to know yourself. Concepts like journaling that we’ve talked about here, plus contemplation, mindfulness and meditation can help.
If you don’t know what your core values are or lack clarity around what’s really important to you, a coaching program like Camp Clarity can help you sort that out.
Express yourself freely
Share your opinions with confidence instead of discounting them as you speak. Too often we let our lack of confidence show when we’re asked for our thoughts. Answers like “Whatever you want,” or “I don’t really have an opinion,” are sure clues that you need to build more confidence and courage to actually allow yourself to be heard.
And when it comes to clothing, music, your work, or your choice of reading material don’t let others pick your style for you. You know you have preferences, and this is a really gentle way to start asserting yourself if that’s something you haven’t done much of.
Stop worrying about what other people think
This is huge… and really, if you want the truth, they’re probably just as worried about what you think of them. What’s the quote…? I think it goes something like “we wouldn’t worry half so much about what people think of us if we realized how seldom they do.”
People have their own problems and insecurities, and letting them dictate how you carry yourself is just self-defeating. Learn to move through your world confidently, courageously, and without apology.
When you can put your fears aside and embrace your own uniqueness, you’ll not only be happier you will also give both your confidence and your courage a boost. It gets easier every time. I’m living proof of that!
Being yourself is about having the courage and the confidence to let the world know who you are. This isn't always easy, but it's necessary to live life to the fullest, and accomplish what you are meant to do.
Where are you right now when it comes to confidence and courage?
