When it comes to getting your message heard, the first thing you need to know is who wants to hear it. If you get the market wrong, chances are you won’t be seen and heard by the people who really need what you have to offer. In fact, most marketing courses being taught today spend a good deal of time teaching you how to know your audience.
So how can you get to know your audience?
Here are 5 ways interact with, and understand the people you want to sell your products and services to.
Pick a market you are passionate about
When you choose a market you are passionate about, understanding your audience gets much easier. You already have an idea of their likes, dislikes, needs, and wants. If it’s a topic you are involved with, you know what the problems are that need solving and can relate because you have most likely faced those same issues.
Marketing a business, online or off, in an area of interest that you are extremely familiar with and passionate about is a simple way to automatically understand what your audience is looking for.
Create conversations on your blog
The best way to get to know your audience is to have conversations with them. Sure, you can do this on social media, but the best place to have these conversations is through your blog.
Providing informative, problem solving blog posts is a great way for you to start the conversation. Ending your post with a call to action that invites comments and feedback starts the conversation.
Know your numbers
Yes, you want to treat your audience as individuals and not just nameless, faceless visitors to your site.
But… you must know whether the information you provide is really what they want. Knowing your numbers can help with that. Using tools like Google Analytics give you great insight into your audience. Make use of the information they provide on a regular basis – at least monthly, and more often if you can.
You can learn a lot about your audience by simply asking them what they want.
Surveys are easy to create using a tool like Survey Monkey. Set up a short survey and ask the question, What can I help you with?
Too easy, right?
Host a Q&A Webinar
You can really get to know your audience by actually talking to them. Hosting a live Q&A webinar gives people a chance to really see you in action, and ask their questions in a safe place. You get to really see them too, especially if you use software like Zoom that has a chat feature built right in.
So what do you do with all this information?
Once you have gathered all this information, you need to use it!
Knowing your audience means you can eliminate a lot of the guesswork that goes into content creation. You won’t need to guess what your audience wants because you’ve already asked them and they’ve told you exactly what they need from you. You’re able to create the products and services that will be most useful for solving their problems, all because you took the time to get to know your audience.
