Social networks are a great tool for building relationships with your audience and growing your business. They are also an excellent way to stay on top of developments and trends in your niche.
But, there is a dark side to social networking too… it can be a huge time suck if you let it. Think about how many times you’ve logged in to Facebook to post one little update but end up scrolling through your feed, clicking on group posts, and watching cute videos. Before you know it, an hour or two has passed and you still haven’t posted the update you logged in to post.
As a small business owner, you can’t afford not to use social media to get your content out there. But you can learn some social media management skills that will boost your productivity and make the time suck a thing of the past.
Here are four tips you can use to improve your social networking productivity:
Tip #1 – Track your time
Tip #2 – Log out of your accounts
If you’re always logged in, it’s so easy to just click over to your social media account and take a quick peek. If you log out completely after every use, you’ll be less tempted to go back every few minutes.
Another way to curb social media use is to use two-factor authentication. If you have to get a security code every time you want to log in, you’ll be less likely to want to check “just because”.
Tip #3 – Unplug regularly
One of the worst things you can do for yourself is to be constantly connected to social media. It’s distracting and it’s not healthy.
The best way to use social media is to have certain times when you’re connected and active, and other times when you’re unplugged completely.
For example, you could set your unplugged time to certain hours during the day so that you can focus on creating content or taking care of other tasks.
Having regularly scheduled down time prevents overwhelm and boosts mood. It also shows you that the world won't crumble if you don’t respond to every comment the moment that it comes in.
Tip #4 - Go offline when you’re working
One of the biggest productivity killers is constantly checking in on social media. When it's time to get down to work, block your internet access for an hour or two. If you’re on a laptop, disable the wi-fi. You'll be amazed at what you're able to accomplish.
If you can’t find the willpower to block it yourself, look for an app to help you. Some apps will lock down your internet access for a period of two or more hours at a time. This usually works well because the only way to re-gain internet access is to shut off your device and reload your operating system.
Social networks are valuable marketing tools when you have a clear plan for using them. Set guidelines for yourself so that you know when you’re being productive and you will be able to get the most out of your social networking, and still get your work done too.
