We’ve talked a lot over the past few weeks about how to take care of yourself, but the one thing we haven’t really delved into is exactly why self-care is so important. So let’s do that today.
Does this sound familiar? A head full of dreams and promises in your heart, thinking you can conquer the world. You think that you’re still capable of burning the candle at both ends like you did when you were a 20-year-old college kid, but I have bad news for you. You can’t. (And I know this because I’m still stubborn enough to try it on occasion and it knocks me flat for a week.)
On with the story…
At some point, you gained weight, added a decade or three and life has exhausted you. You reach a point where you have no idea who you are anymore, what you want, or how to get it.
You don’t want to ever find yourself in this position, however, if you do it’s important that you know you have options in digging yourself out of it. The best way to manage these situations is by taking better care of yourself in the first place.
It’s shocking to think how many of us are suffering simply because we don’t practice self-care. It impacts your confidence and ability to love yourself, but it can also prevent you from achieving your goals and living the life you want for yourself.
When you start to focus on yourself you will see everything start to change and fall into place. And just in case you needed a little more motivation, here are five reasons a self-care practice is essential to your wellbeing.
Reason #1 –
When you love your body, it loves you back
We are more likely to treat our bodies badly in a bid to get them into the shape we want, but how is depriving yourself going to help matters? Treat your body with love and respect.
Eat food that will nourish you and exercise to keep yourself fit and in shape. Start noticing all of the ways your body is beautiful and it will give back and make you feel like a goddess, and you won’t need to worry about burning out prematurely.
Reason #2 –
Taking care of yourself is just like taking care of others
As women, we’re always worried about taking care of other people. Our partners, our kids, our friends… everyone but ourselves it seems.
And it starts early. Ask a pregnant woman why she’s taking care of her own needs, and the answer will invariably be that she’s doing it for the baby.
When you take care of yourself, you are ensuring that you have the energy, love, and time to give to everyone around you, too. If you have to tell yourself you’re doing it for them, that’s okay… as long as you’re doing it.
Reason #3 –
Your light shines from within
When you take care of yourself, you are giving yourself the opportunity to let your light shine bright. And, at the same time you are also empowering others to do the same. Your energy can be inspiring to those around you, and you might never know who you’ve helped just by taking care of yourself and setting that example.
Of course, there’s also that old adage about beauty coming from within and failure to practice self-care is likely to dampen your inner glow.
Reason #4 –
You’re able to give yourself a break
Just because you can have it all and be a modern superwoman doesn’t mean you should try and have everything all at once!
You don’t need to succumb to the pressure to juggle that successful career, as well as your marriage, children, home, friends, and body. Don’t even try to do everything all at once, you’ll simply burn yourself out.
Practicing self-care allows you to give yourself a break, recharge your batteries and refresh your mind before you dive back in to the craziness of your life.
Reason #5 –
You will have more energy for living life
Think of your energy beng like your fuel tank or your bank account, and it’s a bit easier to understand just how terrifying it can be to drain it. You see the needle approaching the big red E on the gas gauge and you drive to the gas station to fill the tank, otherwise, you risk running out and being stranded.
The same thing holds true when it comes to your bank account. You don’t spend more than what you have and if you do, you may pay a fee for overextending yourself. If you open a credit card and max it account and you can’t pay it back you have destroyed your credit and made it impossible to borrow from any credible lender.
When it comes to self-care, your body is the credible lender and if you continue drawing too much out of it, it will give up on you. You need your health to maintain all of the activities that you do, so take time now to practice self-care instead of risking a burnout.
When it comes to taking care of yourself, you can see why it’s an essential habit to develop. It doesn’t matter how big your small your self-care efforts are; what matters is that you do something everyday to love yourself, give yourself a break, and replenish your energy stores. Only in this way will you be able to take care of your loved ones and live your life to the fullest.
