Blogging is great for your business, and it can be great for you too. But not if you are paying so much attention to what your competition is doing that you get all stressed out about it.
I belong to a bunch of blogging groups on Facebook, and I can tell you that there are some really amazing blogs there. And I’ve had some serious cases of blog envy over the years. But if I spent all my time stressing about what they do better than me (and there’s a lot of that), I’d never get anything done on my own sites.
So, if you’re stressing about the competition it’s time to STOP IT!
And here’s why…
The sheer productivity issues that come from spending time worrying about what everyone else is doing aside, stress of any kind is really bad for you. Mental stress can lead to physical issues and as entrepreneurs we need to be at our best both physically and mentally.
Your focus, in your business should really only be on the things you can control. And let’s be honest here, you can’t control what your competition is doing. Besides that, your competition is not you. They don’t have your unique voice. They don’t have your unique vision. They don’t have your unique tribe. The people that follow you do so because what you say and do resonates with them.
The one thing you can control is what you choose to do. So if you’re stressing out over what your competition is doing, it really means you are stressed about something you are NOT doing and think you should be.
This could mean using tools to make you more productive. If you’re not using things like smart blogging tools, editorial calendars, and a virtual assistant you might not be as productive as you’d like. If you put your energy into using the resources available you’ll be more productive in your own business and less likely to stress about what other bloggers are doing.
Another cause of blogging stress is the “keeping up with the neighbours” syndrome. Granted, there is a lot of competition among bloggers just because of the sheer numbers. But if you’re always focused on what the competition is doing and changing your plans to keep up with whatever new tricks they’re using, you are not focused on growing you own business in a way that resonates with your voice, vision, and tribe.

So, what can you do to rid yourself of this stress?
How To Overcome the Stress of Worrying about Your Competition
First, know what you want. You need to know what you want, what your purpose for being in business is, and what goals you want to achieve.
Second, have a plan to achieve your goals and a way to stick to it.
Third, stay focused on your own plan and take the actions you need to make it a success.
Finally, don’t give in to the temptation to always be checking out the competition. Do pay attention to industry trends and what others in your niche are doing, but… Do so in such a way that you consider whether or not adding something new is right for your business at this time and only make changes if they fit your plan and your vision.
If you do find yourself feeling stressed, take a deep breath and spend a few minutes visualizing your successful blog and business. Then get back to work!
When you have a plan, stay focused on what you can control, and create amazing content that speaks to your tribe with your unique voice, then the shoe will be on the other foot… and your competition will be the ones checking you out!
