Self-care is so important to self-confidence. As I mentioned in The ABCs of Self-Confidence, you have to take care of yourself to feel good about yourself. If you don’t feel good about yourself, you won’t practice any form of self-care because you think you’re just not worth the time and effort. (I know… I’ve been there.)
There are so many little things you can do to take care of yourself. You don’t even have to tackle the big things like weight loss, fear, or any of the other issues that make you feel less than confident with yourself. You can start taking care of yourself with little things like a bubble bath, a good book, spending an hour outside at the beach. All these things allow us to recharge our batteries and yet they’re the first things that get put aside because we think they’re not important.
Show yourself you’re worth taking care of by making time for the little things that make you feel good about being you. And if you need some suggestions, here are five ways to take care of yourself that will leave you feeling good at the end of the day.
Self-care Tip #1 – Get dressed in the morning
There’s something to be said for getting up and getting dressed in nice clothes first thing in the morning. I know I feel great when I do it, but most of the time I throw on workout clothes and head for the desk.
Don’t do as I do. Instead, make it a habit to shower and get dressed nicely in the morning, even if your job doesn’t require it, you work from home, or it’s the weekend. It gives you a feeling of pride and confidence, and more importantly it signals your mind that you’re ready to go and seize the day.
Self-Care Tip #2 – Get some exercise
Okay, okay … I can hear you grumbling already. But the truth is that exercise is one of life’s gifts if we take the time and the effort to actually do it. Your body wasn’t meant to sit still in a chair or on a couch all day long, so getting out and moving around is one of the best ways you can take care of yourself.
For me, personally, that means spending time either walking the trails around here or in the pool either swimming laps or doing aqua fit classes. For you it might be lifting weights or doing a cardio class at the local gym. Or it might be spending time doing outdoor sports like cycling or running.
One of the things I’ve noticed about exercise is the more you do it, the more confident you feel. There’s a feeling of strength and confidence that comes from being fit and healthy that you just can’t get anywhere else. And the cool thing is, exercise kinda grows on you. Once it becomes a part of your routine, you won’t feel like yourself if you miss a day.
Self-care Tip #3 – Spend time with your loved ones
According to The Beatles, “Love is all you need.” Well, maybe food and shelter and exercise too, but love ranks right up near the top of the things that truly make us happy. Love also plays a role in building confidence.
Spending time with your partner and/or your children is a great way to find those moments where self-care and caring for others comes together. Yes, you need your time alone, but being connected to others is a truly satisfying way to spend at least a part of your day.
Some ways you can incorporate this are to have a date night with your partner, or a family night with the kids. Don’t forget your friends too, and make sure to include times for yourself and your friends without the spouse and kids.
Self-care Tip #4 - Love yourself just the way you are
And now we get to the real heart of the matter. Taking care of yourself means loving yourself, just the way you are right now. Forget about the weight you think you need to lose. Forget about the flaws that only you can see. Look in the mirror and see the beautiful person that you are, and carry that image with you throughout the day.
Low self-esteem affects so many women, and it’s a shame really that we’ve become conditioned to hate ourselves because we don’t look like someone else’s idea of what we should be.
So when you can look yourself in the mirror and smile, and say “Yeah, I look good today” your self-esteem will thank you, you will feel much better about yourself, and you’ll be able to go confidently about your day.
Self-care Tip #5 - Find a way to treat yourself
Little treats are a great way to make yourself feel good during the day, especially when you’re working hard to be financially responsible. While it’s satisfying to get the bills paid on time and save money for those major purchases, sometimes you need a little pick-me-up to make you smile. Treating yourself is one part of taking care of yourself that is often overlooked.
Find something that you like, that’s special and gives your spirits a lift. My splurges are magazines and flowers. Since I don’t have any outside space here, and no special someone right now to buy me flowers I treat myself to a bunch at least once a month. It makes me feel good, and brightens up the house at the same time.
These are just a few ideas for taking care of yourself that can bring you happiness and a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. Because really, life is too short to ignore the little things that make you happy. When you’re feeling happy, you’re more apt to feel confident about yourself and your place in the world too.
